Where a review QR code actually gets scanned

A QR code is only useful if someone points a camera at it. The businesses getting the most scans put their review QR in places where the customer is already looking - while waiting, while paying, while the job is fresh.

Based on scan-rate data across Elmob.ai customers, here are the placements that work:

  • Invoice footer (digital and printed) - consistently the #1 driver. "Paid in full" is the highest-mood moment.
  • Back of the business card - every handshake becomes a review opportunity.
  • Service van decal - parked at the curb all day. Neighbors scan it too.
  • Table tent or checkout counter - works for restaurants, retail, salons, gyms.
  • Lobby or waiting area sign - bored phones come out. Use the downloadable poster below.
  • Email signature - attach the PNG, link to the review URL. Works in every client.

QR code best practices for small business

Size matters

Minimum print size is roughly 1 inch square when viewed from arm's length, and 4+ inches for anything further than three feet. Vehicle decals should be 6-10 inches. Bigger is better - never shrink the QR below the point where its error-correction pattern is readable.

Don't distort brand colors

You can tint the QR code (use a dark color for the foreground), but keep the contrast ratio high. Light foregrounds on light backgrounds fail to scan. Stick to the 4.5:1 WCAG contrast rule for text and you'll be safe.

Always print the call-to-action

A QR code by itself is a silent square. Pair it with a short line: "Scan to leave a Google review" or "Loved the service? Leave us a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐". Without the CTA, scan rates drop about 60%.

Test before you print 500 of them

Print one proof, scan it from three different phones and two different distances. Only then send the file to the print shop. A typo'd URL on 500 business cards is a painful lesson.

Print shop specs

When sending the QR to a print shop, use these settings:

  • File format: SVG (scales losslessly) or 300+ DPI PNG
  • Color mode: CMYK for print, RGB for screen
  • Quiet zone: Leave at least 4 modules of white space around the code - the tool already does this
  • Error correction: We use H (highest) so the code still scans with the 5-star badge in the center

How this tool works

The QR code is generated entirely in your browser using the open-source qrcode library. The URL is never sent to our servers. The resulting image is yours to keep, print, and distribute - no watermark, no expiration, no tracking pixel.

Automate review collection with Elmob.ai

A QR code is the physical complement to digital review automation. Elmob.ai sends the same review link by SMS the moment a job closes in your CRM - so the customer with the QR-coded invoice in hand also has the link on their phone. Review volume typically doubles within 60 days. Try the free plan.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

Is this QR code actually printable?

Yes. The tool generates high-resolution SVG and PNG (1024×1024) files. SVG scales to any size without losing quality - perfect for vehicle decals, yard signs, and large-format print. PNG is fine for business cards, receipts, and stickers.

Do I need a Google Business Profile?

Yes. The QR code points to your Google review URL, which requires a verified GBP listing. If you don't have one yet, create it at business.google.com first.

Will the QR code expire?

No. QR codes don't expire - they're just an image of a URL. As long as your Google Business Profile exists, the QR code works.

Can I use my own logo in the middle of the QR code?

The tool includes a basic logo-in-center option. For heavily customized QRs with brand colors, drop shadows, or gradient styling, export the SVG and finish it in Figma or Illustrator.

Where should I put the QR code?

The best-converting spots: 1) printed on every invoice, 2) sticker on the service vehicle, 3) lobby or reception wall, 4) business cards, 5) thank-you email signatures. Combine physical and digital placements.

Will scanning the QR still pre-select 5 stars?

Yes. The QR encodes the same direct review URL as our review link generator, so scanning opens the Google review form with 5 stars pre-selected.

Does the QR work on iPhones and Androids?

Yes on both. iPhone's camera app and all modern Android cameras recognize QR codes natively. Older Androids may need a QR app, but usage is near zero now.
