Why does my service area matter for GBP?
Google uses your service area to decide which searches to show you for. If you list every town you actually serve, you appear for more 'near me' searches from those towns.
How many cities should I list?
As many as you honestly service, up to 20. Listing cities you don't actually serve can get your profile suspended. Stay truthful.
What radius is typical?
15-30 miles for most local service businesses. Emergency services go wider (50+ miles), specialty services (dental, salon) go narrower (5-10 miles).
Do I need schema for service area?
Not required, but it helps. areaServed in your LocalBusiness schema gives Google another signal about where you operate. Small lift, free to add.
What about zip codes?
GBP accepts city names, not zip codes. For schema you can use Postal-Code areaServed entries, but city names are clearer and easier to maintain.
Can I copy a competitor's service area?
Look at top-ranked competitors in Google Maps. If they list 12 nearby cities, you should probably match that breadth. Google rewards realistic coverage.
How often should I update?
Any time you expand service territory or add a service truck. Also re-check every 6 months, nearby towns sometimes split or rename.
